Oxygen First Aid Preparedness

9/13/2016

Dive accidents can happen anywhere at anytime to anyone. The standard first aid for dive related symptoms is to administer oxygen. Knowing this, oxygen should be readily available at all times wherever diving is occurring. Before diving at any location be sure to ask about the location of the oxygen and how much is available. Is there enough to get someone to the nearest medical facility? Is it located on the boat or only back at the dock? These are questions you will want to ask so you can be prepared.
However, simply having oxygen available at a dive site is not enough. What good is a tank of oxygen going to do for a diver in need if no one knows how to administer it? It takes special training to correctly and safely administer oxygen to divers and non-divers alike. By getting trained in oxygen administration and other first aid procedures, you ensure that if you or your loved ones are ever unfortunate enough to find yourselves in a dive related emergency situation, properly trained help will be nearby. Remember, the time to prepare for an emergency is before an emergency happens, not afterwards. Knowing what symptoms to look for and how to treat multiple types of dive related emergencies can mean the difference between a speedy recovery with little to no long term issues or a serious problem that could turn into a life or death situation.
If you would like to get trained for first aid or oxygen administration contact your local dive shop or call DAN and take the first step toward safer diving.
