Practice Makes Perfect by DAN (Diver Alert Network)

Often both new and experienced divers find themselves wondering when exactly they should equalize to minimize the risk of damage to the ear. Most authorities recommend equalizing every 2 feet as you descend. This equates to once every 2 seconds if you are descending at a rate of 60 feet per minute. If you are like most divers, you descend much faster which means you should be equalizing almost constantly.

The good news is, as you go deeper you'll have to equalize less often due to Boyle's law. Regardless of when you last equalized, be sure to equalize when you reach your maximum depth. Though the negative pressure in your middle ear may be so small you don't feel it, if it is not balanced it can eventually cause damage to your ears.
